After almost five years as host of Late Night Jimmy Fallon is passing the figurative torch and literal pickle to Seth Meyers.
The big pickle is a tradition started with David Letterman who founded the show and passed the pickle to Conan O'Brien. O'Brien gave it to Fallon, and now it has gone from Fallon to Meyers. Fallon gave Meyers the pickle on Late Night last night, making it the first time the handing over of the pickle has taken place on air.
Fallon even seemed unsure of the tradition's origins. He said "I'm not even sure if it's real or not." He was unceremoniously given the pickle in 2009 by a member of O'Brien's staff. The only notable recording of the event is a web video.
Meyers thanked his predecessor saying "I don't know if I have room for it." Seth Meyers will take over Late Night on February 24, after finishing his run at Saturday Night Live this weekend.
