The Miami Dolphins finally ended their long search for a new general manager after the maligned Jeff Ireland and the team mutually agreed to part ways.
Dennis Hickey accepted the job. According to ESPN, Hickey served as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' director of player personnel for a long time before accepting the Dolphins' offer. He had served with the Buccaneers for 18 years.
The Dolphins endured rejections during their search, and Hickey wasn't their first choice, according to NBCSports. Nick Caserio, director of player personnel for the New England Patriots, was among those who rejected the Dolphins' general manager position.
Hickey will face a challenge ahead of him since the Dolphins have not made the playoffs since 2008 when they went 11-5 to win the AFC East.
Their last playoff win came in the 2000 season, where they also finished 11-5 with an AFC East championship.
The Dolphins will look to build upon their 8-8 season, which ended in disappointment when they lost to the New York Jets at home with an opportunity to clinch the last AFC playoff berth.
