NBCUniversal International Television Production has taken control of Matchbox Pictures, the production company based in Australia. Matchbox Pictures is responsible for the drama, The Straits and the The Slap, a show that has gained accolades from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Michael Edelstein, President of NBCUniversal International Television Production, told The Hollywood Reporter, “Matchbox is one of the most exciting and dynamic production companies we have encountered. Penny Chapman, Tony Ayres and Kylie Washington have a fantastic creative track record and are incredibly well respected. We are excited by what the future holds and are keen to help their programs reach audiences around the world.”

Matchbox Pictures was launched in 2008. The production company develops projects for film and television. NBCUniversal took a stake in the company in 2011.

NBC has plans to adapt the Australian drama, The Slap, into a miniseries. The show has gained popularity since it first aired in 2011. The Slap features Jonathan LaPaglia, Sophie Okonedo, Alex Dimitriades. The show is adapted from a novel by Christos Tsiolkas, according to Variety.
