NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is toying with the idea of getting rid of the extra point after a touchdown.
The commissioner talked about eliminating the point after all together on NFL Network’s Total Access.
“The extra point is almost automatic,” Goodell said. “I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd [attempts]. So it’s a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play.”
According to FOX Sports, the league saw misses from Green Bay, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Tennessee and Philadelphia in 1,267 tries.
If the PATs are taken out of the game, will touchdowns still be worth six points? And will two-point conversions also be abolished?
"So there have been some proposals,” Goodell said. “Some are still going through the process of creativity, but there’s one proposal in particular that I’ve heard about (where) it’s automatic that you get seven points when you score a touchdown, but you could potentially go for an eighth point, either by running or passing the ball. But if you fail, you’d go back to six."
We’ll have to wait and see if that proposal sticks if the extra point does in fact become a thing of the past.
