Philip Seymour Hoffman has signed on to portray Thom Payne in Happyish on Showtime.

According to Variety, the show was previously titled Trending Down. It is an examination of the difference between happiness and unhappiness. The dark comedy hypothesizes that maybe it’s all in the journey.

It stars Hoffman and Kathryn Hahn as Lee Payne, Thom's Payne’s wife. In the show, she is someone who is looking for a larger goal and a meaning when the best anyone can hope for is to be "happyish.” The new series is picked up for 10 episodes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Author Shalom Auslander created the show and is serving as the executive producer with Philip Seymour Hoffman and his Cooper’s Town Productions banner. John Cameron Mitchell, known for his work in Hedwig and the Angry Inch directed the pilot.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is an acclaimed actor in film and television. His complex performances in Magnolia and The Talented Mr. Ripley have garnered him praise. He won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in Capote.
