Renee Fleming has accepted the great role of singing the national anthem at this Sunday’s Super Bowl.
Fleming thought the offer was unreal at first. She told the Associated Press, “Nobody's going to ask me to sing for the Super Bowl, even the national anthem, because it's just never been done, that anybody who was in classical music or any other genre, frankly, other than really mainstream, successful, top-selling, commercial, mainstream artists. So I was stunned when it was real!"
The national anthem is a challenging song, but Fleming said she has no musical fears about the singing the 200 year-old song, according to Reuters. Fleming will not be lip-syncing during the event. She is planning to sing it live at the event at MetLife Stadium, when the Seattle Seahawks will play the Denver Broncos.
Fleming is an opera singer who has won the National Medal of Arts. In 1989, Fleming made her debut with the New York City Opera as Mimi in La Bohème. She serves as a Creative Consultant for the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
