The New Year has so far proved to be successful so far for tennis greats Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, as both have reached the semi-finals of the first grand slam tournament of the year, the Australian Open in Melbourne, Australia.
The semi-final match will be played on Friday in the Rod Layer Arena. This will be the 33rd match up the two have played throughout their careers and will determine who plays for the championship title come Sunday against Stanislas Wawrinka, who has reached the finals for the first time in his career.
Dropping to No. 6 in the rankings, Federer is working to prove he’s still got it at 32-years-old. Without a major title since the summer of 2012, this could be the 18th grand slam title for Federer, stated the The Sydney Morning Herald.
A win for Nadal, on the other hand, would reinforce his No. 1 ranking to clinch his third slam title in four attempts. The The Bleacher Report reported that in their 32 match-ups, Nadal has won 22 and Federer 10.
On the women’s side, Li Na will play in her 3rd Australian Open final in four years against Dominika Cibulkova.
