Russell Johnson, the actor who most notably played the Professor on Gilligan’s Island, has passed away at the age of 89. His wife, Candace, confirmed the news on Thursday.

The Pennsylvania native died of kidney failure at his home in Washington early this morning, said his wife.

"He died at home, peaceful, in his sleep at 5:21 am today," she told ABC News. "[He was] a very brave guy who knew what he wanted, and he wanted to be at home."

Johnson started his acting career after returning home from serving in World War II and he starred in both television and film. He was seen in movies such as It Came from Outer Space and This Island Earth, LA Times reports.

Before his career-changing role came in 1964, he appeared in television shows such as The Adventures of Superman, Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Twilight Zone. He retired from acting in the '90s.

Johnson is survived by his wife, Candace, and daughter Kim. He was the last surviving member of Gilligan's Island.
