Sharknado 2 is still happening, even though Sharknado fever has subsided. The sequel to the SyFy B-movie that wasn’t even ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ will star Tara Reid and Ian Ziering, who both appeared in the original.
In the sequel, the Sharknado - a tornado with sharks - will hit New York City after ravaging the Southern California coast in the first film. The New York Daily News was the first to report that Reid and Ziering will play the same characters, Fin and April.
The original Sharknado aired last summer and sparked a social media craze, even though most Americans really didn’t care about the Asylum movie. It only drew 1.3 million viewers for its first airing. Still, a sequel was greenlit and the network held a Twitter contest to pick the sequel’s name. The rather obvious The Second One won out.
Before Sharknado, Reid was best known for roles in American Pie, Van Wilder: Party Liaison and the cult Coen Brothers movie The Big Lebowski. Ziering is a Beverly Hills, 90210 alum.
"Sharknado was an extraordinary 'perfect storm,' which captured the attention of movie fans across the globe," Thomas Vitale, Syfy's executive vice president of programming and original features, told the Daily News. "By re-assembling the creative team — and dropping sharks onto New York's iconic sites—- we're unleashing yet another 'fin' wave of shark-mania."
Filmings starts in New York on Feb. 13. Sharknado 2: The Second One hits television screens in July.
