The San Jose Sharks ensured that their core players, centre Joe Thornton and forward Patrick Marleau, would stay in San Jose by signing them to three-year contract extensions.
According to CBSSports, their new deals will represent slight pay cuts for both of them. Thornton’s deal averages $6.75 million per year while Marleau’s deal averages $6.66 million.
Thornton is currently a captain for the Sharks, and he leads the team in points with 53 on six goals and 47 assists. His assists lead the National Hockey League. Marleau ranks third in points with 21 goals and 26 assists, according to ESPN.
These extensions will help the Sharks maintain their status as Stanley Cup contenders. They currently sit at fourth in the Western Conference standings on a five-game winning streak. They are coming off a heartbreaking elimination in the Western Conference semifinals to the Los Angeles Kings in a 4-3 series loss.
General manager Doug Wilson said that the Sharks are “very well set for the future” in his statement.
