Actress Sienna Miller took part in the News of the World phone hacking scandal trial on Friday, and ended up talking specifically about a story on an alleged affair between her and Skyfall actor Daniel Craig.
Journalist Dan Evans, who has confessed to hacking phones to find stories, testified that he got access to a voicemail Miller left for Craig while she was still dating Jude Law. “Hi, it's me, I can't speak, I'm at the Groucho (club) with Jude. I love you,” Miller said in the message, Evans testified, CNN reports.
Evans had testified for the prosecution, as editor Andy Coulson, is the one of the defendants. Reuters notes that Coulson had been News of the World’s editor until 2007. He then became Prime Minister David Cameron’s head of communications before stepping down in 2011.
Today, Miller admitted that this did sound like a message she would leave for Craig. While she did say “I love you,” that’s the way she usually ends messages to her friends.
“For a long period of time, he was one of my closest friends,” Miller said. “That's how I ended all my calls to my friends.” She added that they didn’t have a relationship, just a “brief encounter.”
Miller did not testify in court. Instead, she video called from New Orleans. The delay caused a humorous bit of banter between her and Coulson’s lawyer, Timothy Langdale. The two were frequently speaking over each other, so Langdale stopped and told her to speak. “No, you just told me you loved me and I interrupted you,” she replied.
Miller took the opportunity to take journalists to task for focusing on stars’ private lives. “People who heard who didn't understand the relationship would have thought it was a pretty exciting message to hear,” Miller said. “If a journalist got their hands on that piece of information they would have found it titillating and it might have been the basis of a story.”
Law also testified on Monday and had to talk about his relationship with Miller.
