Thanks to a bus driver strike, it’s carpool time for Frankie and Brick. Being on time is a key component in successful carpooling, but it’s not one of Frankie’s strong points. Morning after morning, she and Brick are late. One morning, she tries to pass a garbage truck, but ends up trapped between the truck and a wall. Eventually, after so many late pick-ups, Nancy and Bill take over the carpool duties to make sure their kids will arrive and be picked up on time.
Thanks to a finger slap war with Hutch and watching Hot Tub Time Machine quite a few times, Axl begins to tutor an attractive girl in Hutch’s astronomy class. He actually studies for a class he’s not in. He’s desperate to be with a girl. He thought college would be a buffet of girls, but it hasn’t been. After awhile, he admits that he’s not actually in the class. The girl can’t believe it. She was only hanging out with him because she needed a good grade. Axl can’t believe she was just using him for his brain, considering he’s failing most of his own classes. Although he’s not successful in getting the girl, Axl did finally learn how to study and apply it to his actual classes.
Meanwhile, Mike gets two basketball tickets and can’t figure out who to take. Sue offers to go with him multiple mornings, but Mike ignores her. He finally hears her when he’s out of options and agrees to take her. However, he comes home later to tell her she’s off the hook because his friend can go. Sue is upset about it, but Mike doesn’t notice. Later, Frankie points out that Mike doesn’t actually do anything with Sue. He disagrees with her, but, the next day, he starts to realize he doesn’t do much with Sue. He realizes that she always volunteers to go to the store or hang out with him, but he usually ignores her want to hang out with him. When he comes home, he starts to talk to Sue. She asks, “Dad, why are you talking to me?” He asks her to go to get dinner with him, but she thinks he means she’ll have to run in and pick something up while Mike waits in the car. Mike explains that he’s asking her to go sit down and have dinner with him. She immediately thinks someone is dying or he and Frankie are divorcing. He assures her that nothing is wrong. At dinner he asks her about school and volunteers to attend her assembly for mentoring. They enjoy some much needed father-daughter bonding time.
