Sunday night’s star-studded 71st annual Golden Globe Awards, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., was a night filled with television and movie stars letting loose and grabbing awards while dressed to the nines. As the first award show of the new year, the Globes sets the tone for the rest of awards season fashion.

The biggest trend of the evening was the color red. Bold red lips worn by Taylor Swift, Zooey Deschanel and Drew Barrymore are always a red carpet staple, but the red gowns were what really wowed me. Best actress in a musical or comedy winner, Amy Adams, wore a two-toned Valentino chiffon dress with a plunging neckline. Emma Watson wore her couture Dior gown over a pair of black slacks. Julia Louis-Dreyfus rocked a simple, yet stunning, vibrant Narcisco Rodriguez spaghetti strap halter dress, and newcomer Lupita Nyong’o impressed E! in her Ralph Lauren cape dress. Oh, and Emma Stone is a redhead again!

Shimmery champagne gowns were also a big hit at Sunday’s ceremony. Zooey Deschanel wore my favorite nude dress of the evening, a vintage inspired Oscar de la Renta frock with a hi-low tulle skirt and an embellished cap-sleeve loose crop top with matching pointed toe pumps and a pretty white flower in her updo. Naomi Watts and the newly engaged Robin Wright wore straight metallic halter dresses by Tom Ford and Reem Acra, respectively. Watts accessorized with a chunky gold and diamond chain necklace and Wright kept her dress simple and showed off her hunky fiancé, Ben Foster.

The classic black and white is a trend that has carried over from this past spring. Hayden Panetierre wore a colorblock black and white Tom Ford halter dress, Heidi Klum wore a Marchesa black and white lace print dress and two-time best supporting actress Jennifer Lawrence wore a Dior white strapless dress with black ribbons under her bust and thighs that reminded me a bit of a cupcake. But my best dressed of the night goes to the always stunning Cate Blanchett. The best actress in a drama winner rocked an Armani black and white lace full gown with a high neck and cap sleeves with gorgeous Chopard earrings. Blanchett looked the epitome of Hollywood glamour with her blonde hair styled in a faux bob, minimal makeup and a pinky lip.

Four gorgeous ladies were showing off baby bumps in designer duds on the red carpet. Olivia Wilde is probably the hottest mommy-to-be I've ever seen. The Her star wore a fitted shimmery emerald Gucci Premiere gown that embraced her bump and made her green eyes pop. Wilde's long ombre hair was styled in sexy waves and she wore smoky eyes and a nude lip. Kerry Washington was glowing and showed off her bump in a white Balenciaga tuxedo inspired dress. Drew Barrymore and Elsa Pataky chose to minimize their bellies with flowy gowns. Barrymore wore a white Monique Lhuillier with a sheer overlay of 3D pink and orange flowers and bright red shoes, and Mrs. Hemsworth wore a loose black Paul Ka dress with a metallic embellished neckline.

While most were rocking the winter trends, some ladies seemed to be ready for spring as they walked the red carpet in happy bright colors. Taylor Swift wore a bright magenta strapless ball gown with a black sweetheart neckline by one of her favorite designers, Carolina Herrera. Reese Witherspoon looked classy in a simple teal Calvin Klein Collection with a new cropped haircut, and Kyra Sedgwick wore a coral J. Mendel dress with jade earrings and her strawberry locks in tight curls. Lena Dunham gets my vote for worst tailoring in a strapless lemon yellow Zac Posen mermaid gown. The dress itself is gorgeous, but it’s just too tight and ill fitting for her.

As far as the men go, most of Hollywood’s leading men wore the classic black tuxedo, but a few took a risk and wore dark jewel tones that are right on trend this winter. Usher wore a cranberry Calvin Klein Collection suit and Matthew McConaughey and Chris Hemsworth spiced up their black pants with emerald green and midnight blue Dolce & Gabanna crushed velvet jackets, respectively. Facial hair was another big trend for the men at the Globes. Michael Fassbender, Jared Leto, Joaquin Phoenix and Chris Pine sported full beards while Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael Douglas had the goatee/mustache combo going on.
