Buzz over Disney CEO and chairman, Bob Iger, revealing to Fortune magazine that the highly popular animated film, ”Frozen” is in the works to become a Broadway musical has been circulating the Internet. Whether this musical will go straight to Broadway or just remain exclusively in the Disney theme parks is yet to be answered.
The movie itself featured well known Broadway star Idina Menzel (Princess Elsa), who sang the film’s show stopping number, “Let It Go.” However, the soundtrack differed from most other films because famed Disney composer, Alan Menken, did not compose or write any of the songs for ”Frozen. Avid Disney fans are questioning whether or not ”Frozen is worthy enough to earn Broadway fame.
So what other Disney films would be better suited to be turned into a dazzling Broadway stage performance? Here is a list of top five magical Disney movies that would be better for stage:
1. ”Tangled”: In 2010, Disney released their rendition of the Rapunzel story. With memorable characters such as Rapunzel herself and the charming and comedic Flynn Rider, their character charisma and chemistry would make for a perfect Broadway couple. Menken composed and wrote the score and songs which is always a staple in Disney music. The gorgeous song “I See the Light” would make for a beautiful image on stage as well.
2. ”The Princess and the Frog” :The jazzy 2009 film based on the classic story, the movie featured fabulous music right out of New Orleans and the Bayou. Although it didn’t do as well in the box offices the soundtrack and score itself were definitely memorable.
3. ”Enchanted”: This live action Disney film was already filmed like a Broadway musical, with show stopping numbers such as, “That’s How You Know.” Sets would be simple as the majority of the film takes place in iconic New York City and the dragon at the end of the film would make for a great live special effects scene.
4. ”Toy Story” and “”Toy Story 2”: Perhaps a mix of these two famous Pixar films would make for a perfect musical. With characters who have been loved for years such as cowboy Woody, space man Buzz Lightyear and rodeo girl Jesse the popularity of the musical would be out tremendous. With room to add new songs and using popular old songs such as “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” these films could easily be Broadway gold.
5. Mulan The classic 1998 film about a badass girl who goes off to fight war in China; not only thematically brilliant but also culturally stunning. With memorable songs such as “Reflection” and “I’ll Make a Man Out of You,” it is a surprise this film has not already been adapted into a Disney musical
