The Golden Globes didn't stop HBO's Girls and True Detective from premiering to strong numbers on Sunday night.
The Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey-led series True Detective managed a strong 2.3 million viewers for its debut episode, reports Variety. An encore later also brought in an additional million viewers, giving the drama 3.3 million on the night.
The debut was the best start for an HBO show since 2010 with Boardwalk Empire. Though the numbers aren't as good as Empire's 4.8 million, Detective did debut stronger than Game of Thrones, The Newsroom and Veep did.
Lena Dunham's third season of Girls premiered to an increased audience as well, according to Deadline. The first episode managed 1.1, which is a series high for the HBO half-hour comedy. The number is also 28 percent better than last year's premiere.
The show managed an additional 881,000 later in the night. Variety notes that Girls has already been renewed for a fourth season.
Both shows' stars, McConaughey and Dunham, were up for Golden Globes, with the Lincoln Lawyer actor managing to win Best Actor, Drama, for Dallas Buyers Club.
