American Horror Story star, Gabourey Sidibe, is facing criticism for using the world “Tranny” in a semi-derogatory way while being interviewed by Arsenio Hall.
According to The Huffington Post, Sidibe visited The Arsenio Hall Show on Jan. 23 and discussed living in New Orleans with the talk show host.
In less than one minute, the television star used “tranny” in what she seemed a joking way five times.
The executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, Mara Keisling, told The Huffington Post that using the word “tranny” isn’t acceptable.
“Using it to make fun of people is definitely not OK and using it to make fun of any kind of violence is just plain wrong,” she said. “I know she meant it in fun but that’s the problem in this case.”
“It’s not that she used the word ‘tranny’ but that she’s making fun of violence in a city where the police have a history of committing violence and discrimination against trans women of color,” she continued.
Sidibe took to Twitter to apologize for the comments by saying, “I’ve apologized several times for using the word ‘Tranny.’ I don’t realize that it was a slur. I’m very sorry for my poor choice of words.”
She posted another one right after saying, “I’m also sorry for having made light of a bad situation. It was not my intention.”
The third season of American Horror Story ended Wednesday night with high ratings.
