Aaron Hernandez, the former New England Patriots tight end who is now in prison, was reportedly involved in a fight with another inmate. Authorities in Bristol County, Mass. confirmed that an altercation did take place at the Bristol County Jail Tuesday and that they are investigating.

The news was first reported by TMZ, which reported that Hernandez was allowed to walk down a hallway and somehow came into contact with another prisoner. Sources for the site said that Hernandez recognized the inmate and attacked him. They had apparently been arguing all day and Hernandez had enough of the man.

Hernandez was already supposed to be isolated from the other inmates for fear that he would get into an altercation.

“I can confirm that there was an altercation between Mr. Hernandez and another inmate. The investigation is ongoing, there’s not much we can say other than that we are pursuing it,” Bristol County Sheriff Thomas M. Hodgson told The Boston Herald following TMZ’s report. “We are looking at tapes and doing interviews of anyone who may have been there. We’ll make a determination if any charges need to be brought.”

The investigation into the incident will have to find out how Hernandez made contact with another inmate. Officials didn’t say what started the fight and the two men didn’t need medical attention.

Hernandez has been in prison since June 2013. He has pleaded not guilty in the alleged murder of Odin Lloyd. He is being held without bail.
