American David Wise wins gold in freestyle ski halfpipe

American skier David Wise won the gold medal in the debut of the men’s freestyle halfpipe on Tuesday.

The Associated Press reported that Wise scored a 92 on his first run through the halfpipe. Canada’s Mike Riddle nabbed the silver with a 90.6 score and Kevin Rolland of France scored behind him to win the bronze medal.

As USA Today noted the 23-year-old Wise was the only U.S. skier to make the qualifying round. His teammates Lyman Currier and Torin Yater-Wallace fell during their runs. Currier fell hard and it was initially thought that he would need medical attention, but he was able to ski down on his own.

Wise, who lives in Nevada, came into the Olympics as the favorite to win the gold medal after he had a great run at the Winter X games and won the gold in the Superpipe. He won three gold medals total in that event.

The U.S. medal count now stands at 20.
