San Diego Padres pitcher, Andrew Cashner, won his arbitration case in Florida on Thursday against the Padres. Cashner will earn $2.4 million for the upcoming 2014 season.
Players that qualify attend arbitration hearings to set salaries. The team files one number while the player files his intended salary and the three-person panel decides which figure is settled on. There is no negotiation as only one number is chosen.
The team offered Cashner $2.275 million but ultimately Cashner’s figure of $2.4 million won. According to mlb.com Cashner commented on the hearing saying, “I thought it was an interesting process, all you ever really know is the stuff on the field. It was interesting hearing both sides.”
The $125,000 difference in Cashner’s two offers was the smallest difference of all the offseason’s arbitration filings. Cashner, 27, is glad the issue is resolved so he can focus on spring training which starts Thursday in Arizona.
According to cbssports Cashner will be arbitration-eligible two more times before qualifying for free agency.
