Anna Kendrick opens up about her newest role in the off-Broadway film adaptation, The Last Five Years saying that she wept when she initially read the script.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Pitch Perfect star opens up about how she emotional this film will be for her.
Jason Robert Brown’s musical, The Last Five Years, will be adapted into a indie film written and directed by Richard LaGravenese. Kendrick will star alongside Smash star, Jeremy Jordan in the original 2001 remake.
Kendrick admits that she originally did not listen to the cast recording before receiving the script but she did recognize the name of the writer.
“Parade is my favorite musical of all time, and I think that Jason Robert Brown is an absolute genius, and so many people told me to listen to this recording and see the show, and for some reason it just never happened,” she admitted.
She continued to say, “It wasn’t until I got this script and saw that it was Jason Robert Brown that I even familiarized myself with the material. I wept my way through the script before I ever heard the music, and then the next morning I woke up and re-read the script while I listened to the recording and I was just an absolute mess because it’s so beautiful.”
When Kendrick was 12, she was nominated for her first Tony Award. It’s no surprise her theater background is coming full-circle back into her life within film - like in the musical Pitch Perfect which she recently signed onto for the sequel. However, this doesn’t mean she wants to go back to the stage.
“I know I shouldn’t admit this, but it’s not like it’s some big secret – I just could not sing The Last Five Years eight times a week,” she said.
