BET's hit series Being Mary Jane, starring Gabrielle Union, has been renewed for a second season.
The Los Angeles Times reports that BET's first original scripted drama has been renewed for a second season.
Union plays Mary Jane, a wealthy cable news personality who suffers from an unstable love and family life.
More than 5.8 million viewers, the majority being female, tuned in for the two-hour season finale, giving it the most viewers its had in its series history.
According to The Wrap, the show was successful via social media. The final episode of Season 1 generated over 210,000 tweets. The hash-tag, #BMJFinale, trended at No. 1 both in the United States and internationally.
Being Mary Jane was created by Mara Brock Akil who also serves as executive producer. She is also creator of another BET series, The Game. Akil . The series is directed by Akil's husband, Salim Akil who also worked with her in The Game.
Production for Season 2 is scheduled to start in the spring.
