Hollywood is mourning the loss of Philip Seymour Hoffman and Cameron Crowe posted a blog on his official website, theuncool.com, in honor of the late Hoffman.
Billboard reported that Hoffman died this past Sunday due to an apparent herion overdose. The actor was found in his New York City apartment. He was only 46 years old.
Cameron Crowe directed, Almost Famous which stared Hoffman playing the role of Lester Bangs. Bangs was an American music journalist who wrote for Rolling Stone and CREAM magazine.
Crowe explained what it was like working with Hoffman during one of the most iconic scenes in the film. "My original take on this scene was a loud, late night pronouncement from Lester Bangs. A call to arms. In Phil’s hands it became something different," said Crowe.
From this scene came one of the most iconic lines in the film, "The only true currency in this bankrupt world, is what you share with someone when you're uncool."
Crowe went on to share what happened that day on set of Almost Famous, "When the scene was over, I realized that Hoffman had pulled off a magic trick. He’d leapt over the words and the script, and gone hunting for the soul and compassion of the private Lester, the one only a few of us had ever met. Suddenly the portrait was complete. The crew and I will always be grateful for that front row seat to his genius."
