With a merge of movie and miniseries being lumped in the same Emmy category three years ago, the Television Academy has decided to split the two once again, as well as split Outstanding Reality Program.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, movie and miniseries category will once again be separate, a vote decided by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The Academy also announced Outstanding Reality Program will be split into two separate categories, with Outstanding Structured Reality Program (for example, Antiques Roadshow) and Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program (for example, Duck Dynasty). Outstanding Reality-Competition remains unaffected.
Entertainment Weekly also noted Outstanding Voice-Over will be split into Outstanding Narrator and Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance.
Splitting categories, as well as adding Outstanding Technical Direction/Camerawork/Video, also means more nominees and potential number of nominees. The TV Academy is changing the voting process for the Outstanding Comedy and Drama Series categories; under its new rules, each may now have as many as seven nominees.
The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards will air on Monday, August 25th on NBC.
