Legendary Comedian Sid Caesar died at age 91 in Los Angeles early on Wednesday.
Caesar, born on September 8, 1922, was best known for his innovative comedy sketches on television. In the 1950s, his popular performances on Your Show of Shows and Caesar’s Hour delighted fans. Caesar’s Hour reached over 60 million viewers weekly.
Critics Joel Siegel told the Associated Press, "The one great star that television created and who created television was Sid Caesar."
Caesar was recognized as the best of sketch comedians. The son of Jewish immigrants, Caesar enjoyed spouting melting-pot gibberish that parodied German, Russian, French and other languages. Caesar performed with Howard Morris and Nanette Fabray. Fans tuned in weeks to his Your Show of Show featuring his popular co-star Coca. Over the years, Caesar worked with an astounding number of comic writers including, Neil Simon, Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, and Larry Gelbart, according to Reuters.
Sid Caesar’s popular show lasted until after the popularity of Lawrence Welk’s show put Caesar off the air in 1957.
