After a six hour delay, Dale Earnhardt Jr. wins the Daytona 500.
Fox Sports reports that Dale Earnhardt Jr. grabbed the win at the Daytona 500. Danny Hamlin came in second, and Jeff Gordon took third.
At the beginning of the race, Martin Truex Jr. lost an engine after his oil pump belt broke. After the spill was cleaned up, NASCAR had to stop the race at lap 38 due to severe weather.
USA Today reported the delay, with meteorologist Brian Neudorff reporting that the race can continue after the rain passes through.
Well the delay turned out to last 6 hours and 21 minutes, making it the longest rain delay in Daytona 500 history.
There were a lot of crashes during the race, luckily there were no injuries. In Lap 145, a 12-car crash took out Danika Patrick, Michael Waltrip, David Gilliland, and others. In Lap 162, another 10-car crash took out Ryan Newman, Kyle Larson, and more. In Lap 149, a 7-car crash took out another group of drivers.
After alternating leads, crashes, and delays, Dale Earnhardt Jr. took the win, claiming victory at NASCAR's biggest race.
