The New York Rangers announced on Friday that Dan Girardi has been signed to a $33 million, six-year contract extension.
Rangers officials have been in deep discussion over the potential trade for the past week and a half, according to ESPN. The defensemen will be sticking around for a while longer after having doubts that he’d be traded upon contract disagreements.
The 29-year-old will now gain an annual raise of $2 million and will continue to stay with the rangers—the only team he’s been with for his entire NHL career of eight years.
Known for playing tough and shot blocking, Girardi played 60 games, gained 17 points and averaged 22:40 of ice time, as reported in CBS Sports.
The trade deadline is on March 5th, which now leaves Girardi unavailable to prospective teams and gives the Rangers continuing defensive stability.
Captain Ryan Callahan is the last player the Rangers need to decide on. It seems likely that he will be let go from the only team he’s played for in his entire career, but it can' be certain. Time will tell his fate in just five days.
