All good things must come to an end and for New York Yankee fans the day they hoped would never come has happened. After, 20 years New York Yankee captain Derek Jeter has announced that the upcoming 2014 baseball season will be his last.
MLB.com reports that Jeter, 39 posted on Wednesday, Feb.12 on his official Facebook page that the 2014 season will be his last as a professional player. Jeter's retirement comes on the heels of former Yankee teammate Mariano Rivera's retirement after the 2013 season. The 2014 season, will mark Jeter's 20th season as a New York Yankee and during this span Jeter has won five World Series,five Silver Sluggers five Gold Gloves and achieved 13 All-Star team selections.
According to ESPN, Yankees president Randy Levine said how Jeter called team owner Hal Steinbrenner on Wednesday morning to notify him about his retirment and asked Steinbrenner to not let anyone else know about his plans for retirement. In Jeter's Facebook post he thanked the Steinbrenner family, along with the Yankees organization and his family, friends and fans. Additionally, Jeter wrote on his Facebook post that he has accomplished everything he ever wanted in his professional career. Jeter wrote,"I have achieved almost every personal and professional goal I have set". Here's to you Captain, you had a marvelous career and will be remembered as one of the greatest players to have ever played the game of baseball!
