Erin Hamlin won the bronze medal in the women’s luge singles competition and made history by becoming the only American ever to win a medal in the sport.
USA Today stated that the favorite, Germany's Natalie Geisenberger, won the gold and her German teammate Tatjana Hufner won the silver. Germany dominates the event and has won more than half of the medals given out in women’s luge singles.
But at last an American will share the podium with them.
The Associated Press noted that Geisenberger’s final time was 3 minutes, 19.768 seconds. Hufner, the 2010 gold medalist, finished with a time of 3:20.907 and Hamlin’s time was 3:21.145.
The 27-year-old American luger from Remsen, N.Y started her luging career in 2005 and is a three-time Olympian. She also won a gold medal in the 2009 World Championships in Lake Placid.
Previously, Hamlin said, "I don't necessarily think, 'Oh, I want to make history.' It's more like, 'I want to get a medal.' I'm just really trying to soak up everything up, have fun and be happy with my race."
Now, she has claimed both the medal and a spot in history.
