The Seattle Mariners continued their offseason spending spree by signing closer Fernando Rodney. Rodney's contract is worth $14 million over two years.
According to ESPN, Rodney will receive an additional $500,000 in incentives based on the number of games he finishes.
The Mariners are hoping to get elite production out of him like his 2012 season with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he notched 48 saves out of 50 opportunities, according to CBSSports.
Rodney's accomplishments in 2012 earned him an All-Star Game trip and a Comeback Player of the Year award.
Rodney's earned run average stood at a minuscule 0.60 along with 76 strikeouts in 74.2 innings. He fell back to Earth in 2013 with a 3.38 ERA and 37 saves out of 45 opportunities, but he still struck out 82 batters in 66.2 innings of work.
Rodney enters his 12th season in the majors, and he has 172 career saves in stints with the Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels and the Rays.
He is expected to supplant Tom Wilhelmsen and Danny Farquhar as the Mariners' closer as Wilhelmsen and Farquhar move to setup duty.
