The 35-year-old singer announced that he wants to have a seat in Congress.

Clay Aiken will be running as a Democrat for the North Carolina seat in Congress. The seat is currently Renee Ellmers.

Aiken has had a successful career since becoming the runner-up on American Idol. He has recorded an album and appeared on Broadway. In addition, he spoke out against the ban on gay marriage in North Carolina.

As reported by Yahoo Music, Aiken said, "I'm not a politician. I don't ever want to be one, but I do want to help bring back — at least to my corner of North Carolina — the idea someone can go to Washington to represent all the people, whether they voted for you or not.”

As earlier reported by USA Today, Aiken posted a video to YouTube on Feb. 5. In the video he talked about how he was raised by a single mother and when he was a special education teacher, he always had a strong desire to eventually serve in Congress.

Aiken will be racing against two other Democratic candidates, including Keith Crisco, a former state Commerce Secretary.

In 2006, President Bush appointed Aiken to a commission which focused on people with intellectual disabilities.

Aiken is definitely shaking up the political and music world with the release of this video.
