Former pitcher and baseball analyst Curt Schilling announced Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with cancer.
In a statement released by ESPN Schilling said, "I've always believed life is about embracing the gifts and rising up to meet the challenges. We've been presented with another challenge, as I've recently been diagnosed with cancer.
"With my incredibly talented medical team, I'm ready to try and win another big game. I've been so very blessed and I feel grateful for what God has allowed my family to have and experience, and I'll embrace this fight just like the rest of them, with resolute faith and head on."
In 2001, Schilling's wife, Shonda battled melanoma, ESPN notes.
Schilling did not specify what type of cancer he had.
The 47-year-old right hander pitched from 1988-2007, for the Philadelphia Phillies, the Boston RedSox, the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Houston Astros and the Baltimore Orioles, according to Baseball-Reference.com.
He has 216 career wins and is a three-time World Series champion.
