American skier Julia Mancuso won the bronze medal in the women’s super-combined on Monday, earning the first medal for the U.S. in Alpine skiing.
According to USA today, no other American female skier, including Lindsey Vonn and Picabo Street, have medaled more than Mancuso. Her medal count stands at four, a gold medal in the giant slalom in 2006 in Turin, two silver medals in the downhill and combined in Vancouver and now the bronze in Sochi.
The Associated Press notes that the 29-year-old was 0.53 seconds behind Germany’s Maria Hoefl-Riesch, who earned the gold medal and defended her title from the Olympics four years ago.
Hoefl-Riesch was also 0.40 seconds faster than Austria’s Nicole Hosp, who took the silver medal.
Mancuso’s performance puts her as one of the favorites to win the women’s downhill on Wednesday.
After she nabbed a spot on the podium, congratulatory messages from former and current Team USA skiers poured in for her on Twitter.
