NBA legend Magic Johnson, who most famously played for the Los Angeles Lakers, is keeping his roots in Los Angeles sports alive by being a part of an investment group who has brought the Los Angeles Sparks WNBA team.
Yahoo Sports reports that the Laker legend is part of a group that is buying the Sparks. WNBA President Laurel Richie couldn't be happier about it. Richie told the Associated Press how, "When Magic chooses to enter into a partnership with a WNBA team, that's a great thing". Richie further adds that Johnson's long experience and expertise in the game of basketball will be very beneficial.
ESPN reveals that the Sparks, who are one of the original eight WNBA teams, have been in trouble since Christmas, after their previous owner, Paula Madison, suddenly told the WNBA officials, Sparks coaches, and employees, that her company could no longer afford to operate the team. Madison told The Associated Press that "her family lost $12 million operating the franchise since buying it from the Buss family in 2007 and $1.4 million last season". But, now Sparks fans have nothing to fear with Johnson stepping in to save the team.
