The Miami Marlins signed relief pitcher Carlos Marmol to a one-year deal worth $1.25 million, pending a physical exam.
The deal could include other incentives, according to ESPN. These possible incentives are unknown though.
Marmol is looking to rebound from a forgettable 2013 season with the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers, where he recorded a 4.41 earned run average with only two saves in 51 games.
He is expected to compete with incumbent closer Steve Cishek for the job. Cishek notched 34 saves with a 2.33 ERA and a 2-4 record for the Marlins in 2013
Marmol brings plenty of experience to the closer position though with 117 career saves in seven seasons, according to CBSSports. His win-loss record currently stands at 23-32.
This includes a career-high 38 saves in 2010 with the Cubs with a whopping 138 strikeouts in only 77.2 innings.
Marmol has struggled since saving 34 games in 2011 though, losing his closer job in the second half of the 2012 season.
The Marlins will look to restore Marmol's career either as a closer or as a reliever who can provide depth at closer.
