Free-agent relief pitcher Francisco Rodriguez signed a one-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday. The deal is worth $3.25 million plus incentives.
Rodriguez could earn an extra $550,000 in bonuses. The bonuses are for innings pitched and games finished. There is a $100,000 bonus for 55 innings pitched, and the bonuses for games finished are $50,000 each for 15 and 20 games, and $75,000 each for 25 and 30 games, and $100,000 each for 35 and 40 games, according to the Associated Press.
Rodriguez has played with the Los Angeles Angels, New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles, and the Brewers during his 12 year career. He is 41-36 with a2.70 ERA and 304 saves in those 12 seasons. He is a three-time All Star and has been in the top five in Cy Young award voting three times. He had 62 saves for the Angels in 2008, which set a major league record, ESPN reports. Rodriguez’s 304 career saves are tied for 21st all-time with Jeff Montgomery.
Rodriguez should be a great addition to the Brewers bullpen. He will add depth to their bullpen. Rodriguez will be the setup man for Jim Henderson, who had 28 saves as a rookie last season. Right-handed pitcher Donovan Hand was put on assignment by the Brewers to make room on the roster for Rodriguez.
