Journalist Garrick Utley died on cancer at age 74. The popular journalist covered a wide range of topics and was seen on NBC, ABC, and CNN.

According to the Huffington Post, Anchor Tom Brokaw paid tribute his colleague. He told staffers about key points in Utley’s career.

According to the Associated Press, Brokaw said, "Garrick was the first of our generation to crack the starting lineup of NBC News in the glory days of Huntley-Brinkley." Brokaw felt free to call Utley a journalistic "man for all seasons" who was "always the complete gentleman."

Utley was known for covering a variety of programming at NBC. He began his career in 1963 and covered the Vietnam war. He also moderated the popular television show, Meet the Press. Utley became an anchor for Weekend Today and the Nightly News.

His memoir, You Should Have Been Here Yesterday: A Life Story in Television News was a great success. He also participated in arts coverage, hosting the series show on PBS, Live From the Met.

Utley is survived by his wife, Gertje, his brother Jonathon, and his sister-in-law, Carol Marin.
