Tom Brokaw, former anchorman for NBC, has been diagnosed with cancer.

According to the Associated Press, Brokaw said in a statement released by NBC, "With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends, I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come."

The Mayo Clinic discovered that Brokaw has multiple myeloma, a cancer affecting blood cells in the bone marrow. This is a treatable form of cancer. His doctors are optimistic and encouraged by his progress since Brokaw and his family received word of this last Summer. Brokaw told NBC News said that he wants to thank everyone for their support. He also wants to keep his health a private matter.

According to Reuters, Brokaw is continuing with NBC as a special correspondent. He has had the opportunity to cover the Olympics in Sochi.

In addition to being a reporter, Brokaw is an author and has written The Greatest Generation, his celebration of Americans who survived the 1930s and World War II.
