We all know that Netflix binge watching can result in falling asleep, slumped over the computer, only to wake up confused as to where we left off. The workers at Netflix know the struggles of being an obsessive compulsive TV series watcher and developed a hack to work with your sleeping schedule.
Engineers merged the streaming service with Fitbit data to be positive that you don’t miss a minute of the episode you’re watching. You never know who could die, what new character could be introduced, or what spoiler you would wake up to after your peaceful slumber.
Netflix went forth with a 24-hour Hack Day that began on Thursday and ended well into Friday morning. Sam Horner, Rachel Nordman, Sam Park, Bogdan Ciuca and Arlene Aficial built a sleep tracking system that focuses on communication between Netflix and the fitness tracker. Netflix then pauses the video and causes the audio to fade out once the viewer starts catching some Z’s, as reported in PC Mag.
This hack can prove to be extremely useful. It’s difficult to reach into your brain to try to remember the exact moment you dozed off. The hack gives users two choices— to start watching from where you fell asleep or where the stream ended.
Don’t get too excited though. Although Netflix approved this hack-a-thon, it is not assured that users will see this wondrous discovery executed in the website, as reported in Time.
There could also be bugs in the idea. Could users be mistaken for sleeping if they’ve been so involved in the show or movie that they haven’t touched the screen in a while? If users have to continuously lift their lazy fingers just to touch the keypad, it could possibly be mistaken for the end of the world.
