The NFL has picked two New York teams to kick off the 2014 season in the Hall of Fame Game at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio this August. The New York Giants and Buffalo Bills will play in the preseason match-up.
The game is set for Sunday, Aug. 3 and will be played in primetime at 8 p.m. NBC will broadcast the game, the NFL said.
It is hardly a surprising match-up as both franchises will see a player inducted into the Hall of Fame the day before. As the New York Daily News notes, the Giants’ Michael Strahan and the Bills’ Andre Reed will be enshrined in Canton as part of the 2014 Class. The other 2014 Hall inductees are Derrick Brooks, Ray Guy, Claude Humphrey, Walter Jones and Aeneas Williams.
Despite playing for cities in the same state, the Giants and Bills don’t have a long history together. The two last played a regular season game in 2011. Their most famous moment together is Super Bowl XXV, when the Giants barely topped the Bills 20-19.
The Giants and Bills do get an extra preseason game by participating in the Hall of Fame festivities and will start their training camp earlier than the other franchises. The Giants, who failed to make the playoffs last season, will start training camp on July 19.
