The Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Sochi will be broadcast on NBC. The festivities include a celebration of Russia and a parade of athletes.

According to the Associated Press, just after the sun set over the Caucasus Mountains, Russian TV star Yana Churikova shouted to the pre-show crowd, "Welcome to the center of the universe!"

In a fantastic event, spectators in Sochi enjoyed a celebration of Russia, including its rich and complex history. The ceremony on the edge of the Black Sea was Russia's chance to tell its story of post-Soviet resurrection to the world. The ceremony's director, Konstantin Ernst, said the opening and closing ceremonies will make reference to the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics. The Opening Ceremonies this year were focused on TV audiences, with projections onto the stadium floor.

A parade of athletes play a role in the festivities each year. Approximately 3000 athletes will compete in the Games this year. There are 98 events.

Despite some initial controversy, many are wishing for the best this year. According to Reuters, state media reported that China's President Xi Jinping said Russia's Winter Olympics would be splendid.

According to official website of NBC, the opening ceremony will be broadcast this evening at 7:30PM.
