Well-respected American actor and director, Philip Seymour Hoffman, was found dead of an apparent drug overdose in his New York apartment on Sunday morning.

A law enforcement official stated that Mr. Hoffman, 46, had been found at 11:30 a.m. by a worried companion who could not reach contact with Mr. Hoffman, according to nytimes.com.

Hoffman, who has been open about his personal struggles with drugs, appeared to have died from substance overdose, but it is yet to be confirmed, according to rollingstone.com.

The list of Hoffman's accomplishments is a tremendous one
and he will be remembered for his brilliant acting and directing work in "Capote," "The Big Lebowski," "Patch Adams," and "Doubt"-- just to name a few.

Hoffman won three Tony Awards for his work in theatre and was nominated three times for Best Supporting Actor.

Hoffman became an academy award winner for his role in "Capote" in 2005. His most recent work involves his roll in Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
