A Ukrainian plane made an emergency landing in Turkey on Friday when reports that an alleged hijacker was aboard and wanted to divert the aircraft to Sochi, Russia.

According to CNN, officials with Turkey's Transportation Ministry have said that the plane landed at an Istanbul airport after the passenger "said that there was a bomb on board" and wanted the plane to land in Sochi.

"While the plane was in the air, one of the passengers said that there was a bomb on board and asked the plane to not land in Sabiha Gokcen (in Turkey) but rather to land in Sochi," said Transportation Ministry official Habip Soluk.

The New York Daily News noted that an F-16 accompanied the plane as it approached the airport.

When the plane grounded the suspect was taken into custody.

Safety at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games has been a major concern ever since the city of Sochi was announced as the host. However, officials have vowed that massive measures to protect the public have been taken.

The opening ceremonies of the Games had already begun when the hijacking was reported.
