Russia won their first gold in the Sochi Winter Olympic Games Sunday. With much excitement, the Russian figure skating team complied 75 points in the new figure skating team event to win the gold performing on Olympic ice in their home country reported the Associated Press.
As President Vladimir Putin of Russia watched in the crowd Sunday, 15-year-old, Julia Lipnitskaia secured the gold during her free skate program before the last round of ice dancing began. After not winning gold in a single sport during the winter games in Vancouver four years ago marking the first time since 1960 that Russia or the Soviet Union had not won gold, the Russian team proudly reasserted their power in the sport reported the New York Times.
In addition to Lipnitskaia, the Russian team was comprised of nine other skaters who performed in the men’s short and free skate, ice dancing short and free skate, and Pairs short and free skate programs. Canada won the silver coming in with 65 points and the United States took bronze with 60 points.
Figure skating will continue on Feb. 11 with the pairs short program.
