Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, writing duo behind This is the End, have gotten the pilot for Preacher, based off the ‘90s comic book series, off the ground with AMC.
The deal with AMC is not only official, but requires a “hefty commitment”, according to The Hollywood Reporter. With several networks bidding on the show, it would hint that AMC is planning on a series and not just a pilot.
Rogen and Goldberg will both write and executive produce. Sam Catlin, writer-director of Breaking Bad, will also be on board the project as showrunner, reports The New York Post.
With the success of The Walking Dead for AMC, it’s a wise move to invest in other comic book inspired series, and Garth Ennis and Steve Dillion’s Preacher is a promising choice. The Vertigo comic is a story of a possessed southern preacher, his assassin ex-girlfriend, and an Irish vampire all out to track down God, who has shirked his responsibilities. All while being hunted by a lone gunman.
This is not the first attempt at an adaption of the comic, however. Dogma director Kevin Smith (aka “Silent Bob”), had made a similar attempt to bring the show to HBO. This was followed by several failed attempts to turn the comic into a film, from filmmakers such as Sam Mendes and Joe Carnahan, among others.
