Andy Samberg is a busy man and there’s no way he can star in two comedies on both sides of the Atlantic. After winning awards for Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the Saturday Night Live alum has decided to stick with that show and drop of out the BBC sitcom Cuckoo. The show’s producers have picked an international star to replace him, Twilight’s Taylor Lautner.
Lautner played Jacob Black in the Twilight series and this will be his first TV role since the franchise ended, notes The BBC. He will play “a nice-but-dull lawyer” who is Rachel’s new American boyfriend after Samberg’s character left for the Himalayas.
“I'm delighted to welcome it back with the addition of superstar Taylor Lautner,” BBC Three Controller Zai Bennett said, promising that Cuckoo’s second series will be "one of the comedy treats of the year.”
Cuckoo’s first series earned two British Comedy Awards and a BAFTA nomination for Greg Davies’ performance. The show also stars Helen Baxendale.
Cuckoo was Samberg’s first TV gig since leaving SNL. He has since taken the starring role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which earned him the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. The show also won the top Comedy Series Golden Globe and airs Tuesday nights on Fox.
As for Lautner, he hasn’t had much of any success in the movies since Twilight ended. He appeared in Grown Ups 2 and did star in the 2011 action flop Abduction. Perhaps a change of format will do the 22-year-old good.
