In the noon quarterfinal game on Wednesday, Team USA sent the Czech Republic packing with a score of 5-2 as they head to the semifinals.
With just 1:39 in the first period, James Van Riesmdyk gave team USA an early 1-0 lead over the Czech Republic. USA lost the lead when a few minutes after, Milan Michalek netted the equalizing goal and pulled even with a tied score.
A helpful pass from Backes allowed Dustin Brown to one-up the Czech Republic, making the score 2-1. The first period was filled with gripping action and force from both teams.
With 1.8 seconds left in the first period, Ryan Suter drilled the puck in the front of the net. Suter sealed a 3-1 lead with a buzzer beater right before the break. A lot of the USA goals were made off of mistakes made by the opposing team.
The second period brought a USA power play goal and a 4-1 lead by captain Parise at 10:29. The Czech Republic pulled Ondrej Pavelec and put Alexander Selak in goal, as reported in The Boston Herald.
At 17:59 in the third, Phil Kessel scored as he made a B line for the front of the net. With seven minutes on the clock in the third period, Ales Hemsky scores on a two on two with a quick shot that sent the puck over Quicks’ shoulder, according to CBS Sports
With a final score of 5-2, team USA moves on to the semifinals. Canada beat Latvia 2-0 and will play against USA on Friday in a fight for the gold.
