The Baltimore Ravens and linebacker Terrell Suggs agreed to a contract extension on Monday. It’s a four-year extension, which means Suggs will be with the Ravens until 2018.
Suggs’s deal is worth $28.5 million and has an $11 million signing bonus. He will get more than $20 million in the first three years. There is $16 million guaranteed to Suggs in the first two seasons of the new deal. Suggs’ $12.4 million salary cap has been lowered to $7.8 million for the 2014 season. That frees up $4 million in salary cap for the Ravens, according to NFL.com. The Ravens are about $16.5 million under a projected salary cap limit of $126.3 million.
"I'm truly honored that I get to be a Raven for life," Suggs said at the news conference where the extension was announced. "The number one priority for everybody else in this building is to win. This is the business side of it."
Suggs, a first-round draft pick in 2003, has been with the Ravens for 11 seasons. This past season, which was his first full-season since tearing his Achilles, he had 10 sacks. He is the Raven’s all-time leader in sacks (94.5) and forced fumbles (27), and ranks second in tackles and fumble recoveries, according to the Baltimore Sun.
Suggs’s late season struggles this past season led to questions about his return to the Ravens. The Ravens wanted Suggs to stay despite his late season struggles however. With the Suggs deal done, the Ravens can now focus on filling the holes that they have on their roster. They are hoping to re-sign tight end Dennis Pitta, left tackle Eugene Monroe, and middle linebacker Daryl Smith.
