The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug had a huge opening weekend internationally and in China, making over $32 million.

The second film in the Hobbit trilogy opened on 5,500 screens in China, The Hollywood Reporteradded.

This marks the biggest three-day opening of all time for a Warner Bros. film. The earnings of Smaug exceeded the first film by over 74 percent in China.

Smaug also set a record for IMAX in China over the weekend. The film had the biggest opening ever for a Hollywood title, making $4.4 million at IMAX screens. The last film to come close was Gravity with $4.3 million.

Currently the Desolation of Smaug has earned $631.1 million internationally and when the North American box office is added in that brings the total to $893.7 million for Peter Jackson film, The Wrap reported.

The film will open in it's final market, Japan, shortly.

The first Hobbit film made $1.01 billion at the global box office, so the race is on to see if The Desolation of Smaug will pass the first film.
