The Olympics have concluded and it’s back to your weekly dose of Heck hilarity.
The Hecks can’t seem to get their air conditioner to turn off. It’s colder inside their house than outside. While dealing with the frigid indoor temperature, Brick sifts through the hand-me-down box. Unfortunately, there are not many appealing outfits in it. He settles on a polyester suit. He’s never felt so well dressed.
Frankie realizes that Mike is up for an award for 20 years of service at the quarry. He’s not thrilled about it, “I just stayed in one place for 20 years. It’s like giving an award to a tree.” Frankie finally talks him into going, even though he’s nervous about giving an acceptance speech. The entire family is excited to attend “The Quarries,” as dubbed by Sue. Brick will get to wear his new suit. At the ceremony, Mike’s speech is quite depressing as he rambles about past and possible future layoffs. It’s not anything like the speech he originally told Frankie about the history he shares with the men at the quarry. He’s watched their families grow and is thankful to work with such great guys. Mike’s not the only one that has a bad night. Brick realizes he’s where a Shania Twain suit from her “Man, I feel like a woman” collection. To top it off, a lady at the ceremony is sporting the same suit.
While at school, Sue gets sat on. This is a new low for Sue. However, as always, she turns it into a positive. She can’t believe so many people in her school are basically strangers. She decides to get back to her original goal of making sure everyone knows everyone. Her first attempt is “Hands Across Orson High”, but only her two friends show. Her second attempt is “Mix it up Mondays”. The lunch table seating in the cafeterias will be mixed up on Mondays to encourage students to talk to people outside their normal group of friends. Sue initially thinks this was a failure, but soon realizes it worked for everyone but her. And now, thanks to all of her hard work and the cold temperature of the house, she’s sick and has to miss Mike receive his award. In the end, it works out. She’s home when Darren stops by to fix the air conditioner and the two have a genuinely nice moment.
Meanwhile, Axl is on a scavenger hunt to find a mystery girl that left a provocative message on his phone. The only clue they have is how the mystery girl pronounces orange. After an exhausting search, Axl is about to give up. His phone rings. It’s Cassidy. Axl’s friend shows up at the same time with a girl who says orange like the girl in the message. However, Axl realizes the message was actually from Cassidy. He closes the door and has a nice chat with Cassidy.
In the end, it’s all about history and connection. Frankie explains that when you have a history with someone, it creates a connection. That connection makes it easier to communicate, even with minimal words.
