With the first month of the new year almost coming to an end, it is almost hard to believe 2014 is quickly passing by already. When thinking back, so many amazing movies have come out in the past decade that it is crazy to think that so many years have passed since their initial release into theaters. Within ten years there have been countless films that will forever be remembered by generations to come. Ten years ago may seem like a long while back but when looking at a list of films that are turning ten years old this year, it feels like they were released only mere months ago. Especially with the Academy Awards airing in just a few weeks, although they will be honoring the best films from 2013, this top ten list is all about honoring the best films that will turn ten years old this year.

Who could forget the memorable romantic comedy starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, 50 First Dates. Taking place in the beautiful Hawaii, Barrymore’s character, Lucy, who suffers from amnesia, thinks that she is experiencing the same day over and over. Sandler’s character, Henry, ends up falling hard for Lucy and he must remind her every day who she is and what has happened in her life. Although a comedic film, touching moments are sprinkled throughout and ultimately the film has a happy ending.

In 2004, one of the most hilariously shocking films came out that gave transformation a whole new meaning, White Chicks. The famous Wayans brothers, Shawn and Marlon wrote and starred in the film. The two brothers who play cops in the film must go under cover as two white, rich socialites and go through one of the most shocking transformations in any film. Not only do two African-American men turn into white females with pale skin and breasts, but the comedic timing throughout the whole movie create for one giant laugh fest.

A fantastic film coming right out of the UK, Shaun of the Dead is one of the most praised and notable zombie-apocalypse films out there. Starring the famous Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the two play a pair of best friends who must face hordes of zombies while simultaneously dealing with the personal problems. The film is a refreshing comedic take on the typically serious zombie theme. The film is also the first in director Edgar Wright and Pegg’s trio of films called Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy and is followed by Hot Fuzz and then The World’s End.

Another film that turns ten and that isn’t as comedic as some of the previous films is The Day After Tomorrow. Starring Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal and Emmy Rossum, this film was a crazy realistic look at the way in which the world’s changing global climate was affecting the Earth. The film portrays what would happen if our Earth were to experience a second ice age. Although the film is fictional, it was scary to think that global climate change could create something similar in our reality.

The hilarious sequel to the romantic comedy, Meet the Parents featuring stars such as Barbra Streisand and Dustin Hoffman became a box office success in Meet the Fockers. Although movie critics weren’t all to thrilled with the film, audiences everywhere loved the comedic chemistry between, Streisand and Hoffman and Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro who play father-in-law and son-in-law who despise each other. The film really portrayed perfectly what it is like when two over the top families come together and meet for the first time.

In 2004 one of the most popular indie films came out and captured the hearts of young audiences, this film was called, Napoleon Dynamite. Although a campy cult film, the movie brought to life some of the most memorable characters, Napoleon (played by Jon Heder), his brother Kip and his friend Pedro. Who could forget the famous line, “vote for pedro” that has been commercialized and put onto shirts, jackets and other accessories. Taking place in the quiet state of Idaho, Napoleon Dynamite tells the story of an awkward teen going about his daily life in high school just trying to fit in.

The 2004 film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a romantic sci-fi themed story about two lovers, Clementine (Kate Winslet) and Joel (Jim Carrey) who were former lovers but had their minds erased in a procedure to forget about each other after a fight. However, after a series of memories and events the two eventually find their way back to each other even though they had both had the procedure to forget their love. This film goes to show that if two people are meant to be with each other, love will find a way.

The film Anchorman left audiences unable to forget the popular mustache-rocking San Diego reporter, Ron Burgundy. Played by Will Ferrell, Burgundy goes around a 1970s’ San Diego actively reporting on the news but then is disheartened when he is joined by a female new anchor, Veronica (Christina Applegate) who wants to take over the very male-dominated news industry. The film did so well in the box offices that they decided to create a sequel, which came out late last year. Although it took nine years to release the sequel Ron Burgundy returned with the same epic mustache.

One of the most romantic movies of all time was released in 2004, based off of one of Nicholas Spark’s novels, The Notebook. The story of Allie and Noah is one of the most tear inducing tales of true love and devotion. Taking place in modern times with an old couple, we are told the story of Noah and Allie’s love through an elderly Noah. Going back and forth between the early 1940s and modern times, the audience sees the life long romance between the couple. The chemistry between actors, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, is real because the two became a real life couple after the film. It is hard to believe this classic romantic film is already ten years old.

Although the film Mean Girls was geared towards a teenage crowd, this hilarious and quite adult themed comedy, written by Tina Fey, was a realistic and shocking look at how teenage girls treat each other in high school. New girl, Cady Heron(Lindsay Lohan), comes to a new school where she meets a group of popular girls called the “plastics.” The main mean girl, Regina George (Rachel McAdams) is a scheming brat who makes most other girls’ lives in high school miserable. Although the film is extremely over the top, the truthfulness to the way it reveals how girls treat each other is sadly true. The film also has produced many well known inside jokes that are popular on the internet such as “you go Glen Coco” or “that’s so fetch!”
